For nearly four decades, Handsworth Jam-E Masjid & Islamic Centre has been a place of worship, Islamic education and community life in the heart of Handsworth, Birmingham.
Established through the dedication and generosity of the local Bangladeshi Muslim community, the Masjid continues to welcome worshippers and visitors from diverse backgrounds.
Handsworth Jam-E Masjid & Islamic Centre was established in 1987 by a dedicated group of members of Birmingham's Bangladeshi Muslim community. United by a shared vision to promote the teachings of Islam and establish a place of worship, education and unity, the founders worked tirelessly to turn their aspirations into reality.
The building, originally a church, was purchased and transformed into a mosque through the determination, generosity and sacrifices of those early community members. Despite the challenges they faced, their commitment laid the foundations for an institution that continues to serve generations of worshippers today.
Situated on Booth Street in the heart of Handsworth, the Masjid has grown from its humble beginnings into an established centre for Islamic worship, learning and community life.
Although founded by members of the Bangladeshi Muslim community, Handsworth Jam-E Masjid has grown into a welcoming place for people from many different nationalities, cultures and backgrounds, reflecting the rich multicultural character of Birmingham.
Every day, worshippers come together for the five daily congregational prayers, while Friday Jumu'ah brings large numbers of Muslims together in an atmosphere of faith, unity and brotherhood.
Over the years, the Masjid has become much more than a place of prayer. It is a welcoming environment where individuals and families can strengthen their faith, seek guidance, gain knowledge and build lasting connections within the community.
At the heart of Handsworth Jam-E Masjid is a commitment to meeting the spiritual, educational and social needs of the community. Alongside daily worship, the Masjid provides opportunities for Islamic learning, religious guidance and practical support.
The Masjid provides five daily congregational prayers, Jumu'ah, Eid prayers and special religious gatherings throughout the Islamic year. It also serves the community through important life events, including Nikah and Janazah services.
